Mariepskop (or Marepe), is an incredible mountain, surrounded by three of the most beautiful conservation areas of South Africa. It is named after, chief Maripe Mashile(also known as Mariep or Maripi), who used this mountain as a stronghold for his tribe during the Moholoholo war of 1864.
It is the highest point of the Blyde River Canyon, a must see in this wonderful region.
The Blyde River Canyon, Blyderivierspoort in Afrikaans (translated River Canyon of Hapiness) is one of the most important touristic site in the Mpumalanga right after the Kruger National Park as it's the biggest canyon in Africa and the third one in the whole world.
Aside from the beautiful sceneries it offers, the Blyde River Canyon gathers dozens of exciting activites around it : rafting, kloofing, tubing, horse riding, abseiling, boat rides, hot air ballooning, walks around the dam and many more.
But most importantly, you haven't seen South Africa if you haven't seen the Kruger National Park. Jewel of the country, this reserve will allow you to see the african fauna in its natural habitat. Even though many private Game reserves offer good animal sightings, visiting the Kruger Park is still the best way to see animals in their real life while promoting their safety and preservation. With the good advices and directions (and our staff has the best) you will easily go back home with wonderful stories of your sightings.
If you have missed some of the fauna (especially the smallest or rarest ones), you can still see them in one of the protection and rehab centers around town, like the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Center or the Moholoholo Rehab Center. You will be able to see animals from upclose and learn more about them with the guides.
Our lodge is also proud to be the only one around offering a tour inside the local tribes and their culture. Discover their traditional dance contest or visit the "Sangoma", a traditional healer and fortune teller.
